Room 4: Community

This room speaks to the idea of community - the collective energy, shared values, support systems, friendship and solidarity expressed by so many during lockdown. Yet belonging to a ‘community’ includes some and excludes others at the same time. Through the connections forged with contributors, this project seeks to communicate across communities, creating spaces of respect and dialogue around the experiences being shared.

“The past two months have been very hard for us - we live in a small flat and don’t have a garden. My little kids have had a very hard time not having access to playing areas. We used to go there and play and have fun a few times each week. All the playing areas have been closed since the coronavirus lockdown and they are stuck at home and can’t go out. Almost everyday we go together to the nearby playing area in our local park to check if the playing area is open. Everyday we go there and find the same message. The area is closed. My kids ask me when it can open and I can’t give them an answer. They have so many questions and I have very few answers.”

"We have heard many groups campaigning for the regularization of undocumented migrants in Europe with theme ‘Papers for All’! To show our solidarity, my colleague and I took to the streets to campaign and held posters in our hands in our humble way towards our regularization! We become more vulnerable in times of pandemic crisis... We need protections, too!"

“This is how our children spend time at the camp during quarantine. No toys, no playing areas, minimum food, surrounded by police and machine guns. No one is allowed to go out because they say refugees bring disease.”
